Community Learning

St. George's students are encouraged to make connections to the outside world with what they have learned in the classroom. Every grade has multiple adventures in the community that enrich our curriculum and bring lifelong meaning to our students' learning. Initiatives such as our Tanzania and Haiti book projects teach our students early about the importance of helping others and being a caring world citizen.

The Haiti Book Project

St. George's School has developed a global partnership project with the School of Hope in Haiti. Over the course of the year, elementary students in each grade work on writing and illustrating a French language picture book which is then published through a self-serve publishing service.

Parents are encouraged not only to purchase the book that their child helped author, but at the same time, buy a second copy to donate to the School of Hope's new library which was built in the aftermath of the earthquake.

Tanzania Initiative

For the past 7 years, an important aspect of our curriculum has been building student awareness regarding the needs of the children of Africa and in particular the HIV-AIDS orphans of Tanzania. We encourage parents to engage with their children in discussions regarding Tanzania and the positive impact they can have through small acts of kindness.

Initiatives to date include:

  • Change for Change: Every classroom has a collection jar into which students can bring their spare change to help send the orphans to school. A group of students have been making Tanzanian Wrist Bands to remind fellow students to bring in their spare change.
  • Give Up to Give: Students can choose to give up a weekly treat or allowance and instead use the money for the students of Tanzania. Some students have given parts of their allowance, passed up an ice cream cone and donated the equivalent money, etc.
  • Grade 3 students created crafts for a Tanzanian fundraiser.
