FIRST MATH OLYMPIAD A SUCCESS

During the spring, St. George’s experienced a first in the history of its middle school Math enrichment program. The advanced Grades 7 and 8 Math students organized, with the support of their Math enrichment teacher, Erica Muzzerall, an afternoon of Math brain teasers and thinking activities for the Grade 5 and 6 students.

The program was organized in two parts, allowing students to demonstrate their skills and outdo themselves both individually and in groups. Within the individual portion of the Olympiads, students were invited to compete in a variety of math challenges including problem solving, arithmetic, geometry and logic. Mixed Grade 5 / 6 groups worked with the assistance of a Grade 8 student at figuring out intriguing Math situations.

Over the 2 hour period, the engagement of Grade 5 and 6 students remained exceptional. At the end of the afternoon three teams were rewarded for their outstanding achievement. Congratulations to all of the students who outdid themselves and a particular nod to the wonderful work and animation of our 7 and 8 students, allowing for a very successful day!
