As leaves begin to fall from trees and as pumpkins and goblins roll into our local grocery stores, it must surely mean that once again, the school Open House season is upon us.
St. George’s first Open House will take place at the High School on Saturday, October 1st, from 12:00 to 3:00. Visitors will be guided throughout the school by volunteer parents and proud student ambassadors, ably coached by teacher Dani Jansen. Highlights of the tour will include some hands-on science activities for visiting children and of course showing off our newly renovated gym and front vestibule.
A second high school Open House will take place Monday, October 3rd, between 8:30 and 11:00 am. Taking cue from our Elementary School, we will be offering tours of the school that day with regular classes in session. This change in format will allow visitors the opportunity to witness "a day in the life of" a St. George's high school student.
Our Elementary School Open Houses will take place October 12th and 13th from 8:30 to 11:00 on both days. Volunteer parent guides will first offer a tour of the school while classes are in session and then Mr. Peters, Ms. Carson and I will chat with the prospective parents. We are looking forward to welcoming many potential new families as they embark on their important quest to find the right school for their child.
This past Monday, St. George's Elementary School was honoured to host a party of Chinese Educators from Beijing. Their group leader, Mr. Kongli Liu expressed their interest in visiting St. George's as part of their ten day tour of schools in New England. The group spent the morning touring the various classrooms while observing our teachers "in action". They concluded their visit with lunch at "Cafe St. George's".
If asked, a highlight of their visit would have surely included their attendance at our first annual Terry Fox assembly. Spencer Halickman, a Grade 7 St. George’s student, spoke of his involvement with the Terry Fox Foundation. Spencer's powerful presentation was followed by testimonials from Danielle Delhaes and Lori Deegan as they spoke of their own successful battles with cancer. Both emphasized the importance of supporting the Terry Fox run and that the research made possible by the monies raised continues to improve treatments and save lives.
This past Wednesday, our entire Elementary School, led by Spencer, Danielle and Lori, completed their Terry Fox run on Mount Royal. They were cheered on by one of our Grade 11 Phys Ed classes, a number of St. George's staff members, parents and of course Mr. Tim and the Elementary School faculty. All in all it was a great St. George’s event that will continue on as a new annual tradition.
