I am pleased to report that the school year began very well at both campuses as we welcomed back close to capacity enrollment in most grades. Many parents commented on the fresh look of our buildings and our students were most enthusiastic about the changes and improvements that had been made over the summer. To celebrate one such facility upgrade, we invited the Grade 5 and 6 classes to join our high school students in a ribbon cutting ceremony as we launched the rebranded and refurbished high school gym on the first day of school. Imagine, if you can, enormous 10 ft x 14 ft banners hung from the upper regions, a refinished gym floor with St. George's logo on centre court, spruced up basketball nets and a paint job to boot!.
The kickoff in our gym was a frenetic half hour fueled by vibes of a professional DJ who had students shouting, cheering and participating in a friendly Blue Vs. Red tug-of-war. Our brand new gym was soon covered in confetti and balloons while our mascot George the Dragon (aka Allyson Kassie ‘94 and current parent) danced among the crowd with remarkable grace and dexterity, given her size 20 mascot feet.
And then it happened - our gracious and graceful Grade 5 teacher, Clare Gabert, suddenly started to glide and pirouette across the gym floor. Within seconds, Clare was joined by 50 plus members of faculty and staff in a spectacular Flash Mob dance to the music of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” by These Kids Wear Crowns. For perhaps the first time ever, St. George's students were speechless only to then jump up and join in. The whole event was a great success thanks to parent volunteers Pam Itzcovitch, Cheryl Wood, Lianne Deckelbaum, Brenda Metzen and, of course, George the Dragon. (click here for video).
In contrast, and by first week's end, the St. George's community received the sad news that St. George's ninth Principal, Bahadur Bhatla, had passed away after a lengthy illness. I had first met Bahadur in the spring of 1993, just before his retirement and as I was about to assume the Headship of St. George's. I was immediately struck by his intelligence and thoughtfulness, his unwavering commitment to the child-centred philosophy of St. George's, and his dedication to and support of the Sheela Bal Bhavan home for orphaned girls in Jaipur. Bahadur was clearly a devout family man who was justly proud of the accomplishments of his three children Rajiv’77, Sanjeev’80 and Sarita’83.
Bahadur is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Sudarshan, and by his children, grandchildren and numerous friends and extended family members. We are presently discussing with the Bhatla family, our plans to host a celebration of Bahadur Bhatla's life and times at St. George's. We will send details to the St. George's community, as they become available.
