Science Alive and Well at St. George’s
Several years ago, I was involved in an admissions interview with a well-informed and enthusiastic family who had heard great things about St. George’s from family and friends. In particular, they were attracted by our reputation for creativity and the performing arts. However, at one point during the interview, the mother turned to me and asked if we also emphasized science. I was rather taken aback by the question but I was able to her assure her that, not only do we teach science at St. George’s, it is, in fact, a featured piece of our curriculum.
During the past two weeks, science and technology related activities have dominated St. George's high school. The kick off began with our 23rd Annual Science Fair, held on February 9th. It was attended by our elementary school students from Grades four, five and six, as well as our Grade 7 students. In total, 66 projects were presented by students from Grades 8 through 11, and were judged by a fantastic turnout of volunteer parents, alumni, faculty, staff and others.
Projects were creatively titled and ranged from “Sew What?” to “Monkey Business” and “A Designer a Day Keeps the Haters Away”. A public viewing was held at the end of the afternoon, allowing family and friends to view the projects. Finally, several projects were selected to move on and represent St. George's at the upcoming Montreal Regional Science and Technology Fair in mid-March. This display of high quality student work would not have been possible without the hard work of our Science faculty, specifically Jennifer Hunter, Emily Watts, Mark Driedger, Jo-Ann Wong , Sean O’Neill, Stephanie Blum and Jason Arthur. Last week, our science department was busy yet again as St. George’s hosted, for the fourth time in the past eight years, the Weizmann Canada Physics Tournament. Several local schools were invited to this annual event, which was won this year by The Study. The St. George's team, coached by Jo-Ann Wong and Mark Driedger, participated with great intensity and enthusiasm and, ultimately, all of the participants were indeed recognized as co-winners given the ingenuity, hard work and enthusiasm displayed by each team. This past weekend, St. George’s competed in the CRC Robotics Challenge. 22 schools were represented, many of which were CEGEP’s. St. George’s had amongst the youngest team members in the competition and, while official results are still pending, our school finished just out of the final round yet first among all participating QAIS schools. Hats off to Robotics teacher Sean O’Neill for once again showcasing how strong Robotics is at St. George’s. Our science and technology emphasis will continue during the March break, when our Grade 10 Marine biology class visits the world renowned Roatan Marine Biology Centre in Honduras. Our students will have the unique opportunity of putting into practice lessons learned both above and below the tropical seas of Roatan. So, in answer to that original, and hopefully rhetorical question regarding the teaching of science at St. George's, the answer is an enthusiastic yes - science and technology are in fact celebrated and championed at St. George's.
