Our Parent Volunteers
The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) has identified parent volunteers as a key component to the success of any school. Appropriate parental engagement does not just benefit the child of the parent volunteer but benefits his or her classmates as well. At St. George's, we are truly blessed when we consider the positive role that our parent volunteers assume throughout the year. They are instrumental in showcasing our two campuses during our Open House event and this year, 22 parents assisted with our school tours. Their ability to provide first-hand experience as to what it means to have a child at the school, coupled with their infectious enthusiasm and support of St. George’s, has played a huge role in the success of our Open Houses.
Our much-talked about high school community service learning pods represent another excellent example of how our parent volunteers contribute to the school. At the beginning of the school year, Megan Webster, our Community Learning Co-ordinator, met with volunteer high school parents to discuss supporting various local organizations (such as the SPCA, Old Brewery Mission, Starlight Foundation, MADA among others). Subsequently, at the Community Learning Fair, students select among the choice of parent-led pods which are cross-graded with between four and twelve students participating in each. Pods then set off for their volunteer work, often during our teacher professional development days. Needless to say, our pod program would be nowhere without the committed involvement of our parent volunteers whose involvement ensures a more challenging and meaningful community engagement for our students.
I would be remiss if I did not mention our PAC (Parent Activity Committee), yet another stellar example of how parents have enhanced school life at both our elementary and high school campuses. In addition to managing our athletic uniform sales, organizing key annual events such as Red and Blue Day, the Book Fair, Winter Carnival, Read and Recycle, Bake Sale, and Movie Night activities among others, these parents dedicate many hours to making St. George’s an even better place for your child. If you haven’t already, I highly encourage you to sit in on the next PAC meeting - all parents are welcome and you can volunteer to do as much or as little as you like. It is with much awe and gratitude that I thank each and every parent volunteer, for without you, St. George’s would not and could not be, St. George’s.
