November 18th - A Celebration of Spirit
Friday, November 18th began with a sea of red and blue as our Grade 4 to Grade 11 classes assembled in the High School gym for our second annual Red and Blue Spirit Day. Students were divided into two teams (Red and Blue of course) and participated in a number of "Minute to Win It" challenges. Besides inspiring team work and school spirit, the games were physically challenging and provided a great opportunity for our exuberant students to let loose and cheer for their team. Amazingly, (imagine the coincidence), the Red and Blue teams remained tied after 30 minutes of intense participation and it was decided that a shout - off would decide the winners. While there still remains some dispute as to which team was actually victorious, all agree that school spirit was the ultimate winner that day. A very different kind of spirit was demonstrated at the end of that same day as we celebrated "the life and times" of the recently departed Bahadur Bhatla, St. George's ninth Principal (1990 - 1993). In a fitting tribute, extended family members and 100 plus attendees filled the Bahadur Bhatla Studio to pay tribute to this special individual who began his distinguished teaching career at St. George’s in 1962. Invited speakers offered touching and heartfelt anecdotes which spoke to Mr. Bhatla’s greatness as teacher and his humanity as an Administrator. Kenneth Salomon, class of '64, reminisced as to how this favourite teacher of his became a lifelong friend and mentor. Gilbert Plaw and Beatrice Lewis, two former Directors of the school, spoke eloquently and poignantly of Bahadur’s humanity and empathy for others. They offered specific examples of Bahadur's personal life-changing interventions both as a man of principle and empathy. In addition to Bahadur’s passion for St. George’s, he also played a very large part in encouraging St. George’s to support the Sheela Bal Bhavan home for orphaned girls in Jaipur, India. This legacy that continues on at St. George’s is in no small part due to him.
Two of his three children who were in attendance, Sarita (class of ’83) and Rajiv (class of ‘77) offered appreciation and thanks to the assembled guests and to the hundreds of well wishers who had taken the time to transmit both their regrets and offer heartfelt tributes. How fitting to have chosen Spirit Day as the day on which to remember Bahadur Bhatla.
