Career Fair and Junior Robotics
On November 29th, our high school students were offered the opportunity to meet with thirty "friends of the school" as they presented and discussed career opportunities as part of our annual Career Fair. Participation was most impressive and included alumni, current and past parents who showcased and spoke to students about their careers in medicine, media, aviation, the military, engineering, education, law, business (online and direct retail) and several other wonderfully diverse employment areas.
Students were provided a brochure ahead of time which included the bios of each of our visiting presenters and they were encouraged to seek out the employment sectors of interest to them. Most seized the opportunity with real enthusiasm and came away with a greater sense of which career(s) they would be interested in learning more about.
Students weren’t the only beneficiaries of this exchange - many of the presenters had read the "bio brochure" and they sought one another out for a little good old-fashioned networking - you know the kind, before the advent of LinkedIn, where you would actually try to meet face to face and converse with people to further your professional life! The many alums that were present also caught up on the "whatever happened to" aspects of fellow classmates. All in all it was a wonderfully dynamic and fulfilling morning. Perhaps a career in robotics or artificial intelligence is in the cards for some, if not all, of our junior robotics (grade 5 and 6) team members given the skill and inspiration displayed at our first ever Junior Robotics Challenge on December 5th held at the high school. Under the guidance of Robotics teacher Sean O’Neil, alum Matt Silverstein'09 has been working with our elementary students since the beginning of the year. Their first project was to build hovercrafts where they learned how to wire a basic circuit and build a small machine. Their second project saw them actually build small vehicles based on the knowledge they had acquired through their hovercraft project. These vehicles were then put to the test in a series of time trials to determine the fastest vehicle of the day. Robotics is clearly popular not just with our elementary and high school students, but with parents as well based on the number of them that came to watch the challenge event that was ultimately won by Tristan Bushey’18.
