St. George’s School is honoured to have been selected to actively participate in the Iwastology Project. This initiative, led by Arcie Malari, a Filipino Sauvé Scholar and supported by McGill University and Dalai Lama Fellows, Alex Pritz and Christian Elliott, aims to raise awareness and support intercultural dialogue on the issue of global waste through the lenses of schoolchildren from communities around the world using the web.
“Iwasto” means “to make right” in Tagalog, the native language of the Philippines, In English, “Wastology “is defined as the study of waste. Combining these two definitions results in the project’s title,”Iwastology”.
Currently, this interactive, media-rich project involves the Silid Aralan (SAI) afterschool program in Philippines and St. George’s School of Montreal. By learning about the legacy of waste through a global lens, students at both schools are introduced first-hand to the complexity of the worldwide waste crisis. Then, through individual action, they will take on these challenges in local contexts.
Students understand that together they are building a community of knowledge and action around the belief that in a world of limited resources, one of the most important ways of improving our world is to drastically reducing our material footprint and addressing the problems our waste creates.
Live interaction between the two schools is done through Skype and the Taking it Global (TIGweb.org) web platform which enables students from both schools to share amongst themselves the media content of their independent learning processes.
St. George’s is committed to implementing the environment programs resulting from the research conducted through this project, while SAI will be initiating composting and community garden projects, as well as establishing a program to create value-added products made from trash to be sold through the Iwastology website and at exhibits. All the proceeds from these fundraiser exhibits will go to providing school fees for children at SAI.
These two groups of students will be in contact over the next few months via the web, helping one another progress in their research and projects, and providing unique insights and learning opportunities for one another.
